As a child, I didn't have a say on what type of soap to clean my skin. My mother bought big bars of Carbolic soap as a matter of course just like her mother did before her. Ah, I remember that disinfectant scent and you knew that other families in the neighbourhood were also using it. As I grew up, I started to use different and more popular brands of soap. However, I found that my skin would dry out quickly, would be itchy, the fragrance was overpowering and they didn't appear to last as long as the carbolic soap of old. Recently, I have reverted back to those days of old and started using Coal-Tar soap again. Maybe it's out of nostalgia but I have to say, my skin feels better for it. More supple and soft, less itchiness and of course, that clean, hygienic and inoffensive fragrance. Sometimes the old ways are better.
